With nervous anticipation, Betty arrives at the hospital for the next stage in her treatment. Months and months of dutifully wearing her milwaukee brace have not had the desired effect to correct her spine. Now, she must undergo a more drastic treatment if she is to avoid surgery. As she walks down the hallways past the staff her mind is still not fully grasping what she is in for. In the clinic, a nurse prepare her for what she is about to undergo. She explains in detail to Betty what will be done and what Betty will need to do in order to help the nurses with their work. They then start by placing Betty in a large plaster bodycast. Once this is on and mostly set, they transfer her into the casting frame, suspending her with straps and ropes. They then align the rings over Betty and temporarily hold them with ropes as well. They then attach the rings to her bodycast with adjustable spreaders, and connect the rings to each other. Betty is now fully immobilized within the external adjustable metal ring frame. Once the additional plaster has set, The nurses tidy up the cast and ensure Betty can relieve herself. They then transfer her to a specialized wheeled cradle that will be her new bed. The nurse carefully inspects Betty to ensure everything is as it should be, and tries to make her comfortable and warm. Betty is left to familiarize herself with her new situation, one that she will be in for the next several months. A few hours later, a nurse checks on Betty. She brings her a meal and helps her eat, something that Betty will have to endure for the remainder of her treatment. After her meal, the nurse adjusts Betty’s position within the ring frame, allowing her different views of the room. With her arms unable to help her move, Betty discovers that she can every so slightly turn herself in a circle with her feet, if she is aligned correctly within the ring frame. She realizes that she is completely dependant upon others to do anything now! Later, the nurse returns and offers to take Betty around the hospital for a change of scenery. She happily agrees, the room has already become very boring. The nurse wheels her along the hallways and eventually to a lobby. The nurse steps away for a moment, telling Betty she will be right back. But something has apparently come up, and after a long wait Betty finds herself left all alone.
